Transference

During my first year of graduate school, I had a striking realization at the conclusion of one of my courses. Towards the end of the semester, we were assigned to read the article “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo.1 The piece begins like this: “White people in North America live in a social environment that protects and insulates them from race-based stress. This insulated environment of racial protection builds white expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering the ability to tolerate racial stress, leading to what I refer to as White Fragility.” Boom! I was eager to engage with my classmates about the piece. I read the article with gratitude for the content, excited that someone was naming these things. It would have been entertaining to record myself reading this article. I found myself saying, “Yesssssss!” shaking my head either in agreement or as an expression of frustration, making sounds like “mmm,” and so on very often throughout the reading. I all but kissed the pages, highlighting key points and filling the margins with notes including some of my own experiences with white fragility.
